Question Concerning Eagle Feathers
I have a question for anyone out there. I know during powwows when we are eating we are to remove our Eagle feathers (atleast thats what I have been taught). Well, my question is this: my brother gave me a small Eagle feather to hang in my car from the rear view mirror. Like most people, I tend to eat alot of fast foods ( you know, Mc Donalds and such) while on the go. Are we suppose to remove the Eagle feather from the rear view mirror like we do while we are dancing and brake for dinner or what? I'm just a little confused on this subject. I asked someone this question once before and they told me that I don't have to worry about eating around the feather thats in the car. Any help would be greatly appreciated here. I hope I made my question to where you all can understand what I am trying to ask here. Thankds again.

Thanks Angelfeather ... I had another similar question too ...
my brother also gave me two small eagle feathers for a Native Pride hat I wear alot. I know during powwows if an Eagle feather falls on the ground, an Elder is suppose to pick it up ... but what about if you have a feather on your hat (like I do) and your out by yourself and the wind blows it off your head, the feather lands on the ground, along with your hat, how do you pick it up? There is no Elders around to do it for you.

Question concerning eagle feathers
This is a responce to the question about the fallen feather at a pow wow.
The way that I was taught in in a tradishinal ojibway way, the veterans are supposed to be the ones to do the feather ceremony. The story behind the fallen feather is that the feather represents a warrior that has fallen in battle. It is only right that other warriors be given the job of picking it up. I am curious into why the belief of the elders picking it up came about. Meegwetch |

i've been taught that if your feathers touch the ground outside the dancing area and there are no elders/veterans about that it was "okay" to offer a prayer yourself and give some tobacco...really thought provoking questions though...

It 's a sign
I would take it as a sign. Offer a prayer of protection for you and your loved ones. Corn pollen, tobacco, sage, or cedar should also be offered as well.

Yellowhawk, Yes, I would say pull off the road and remove your small eagle feather from your mirror each time you enter a McDonalds parking lot. If you don't, you have to drive backwards to the spot where you first began to get hungry. *L j/k I'm not going to spoil your parade on what you were taught. I will only tell you that different tribes handle eagle feathers in different ways. If you choose to follow what you were told, then you would be adopting the procedures of another tribe. Some tribes have very strict rules for handling and care of eagle feathers. Some not as strict. I attend traditional ceremonies where an eagle feather is dropped, you just pick it up and continue dancing. That does not mean our people think any less of respect for an eagle feather, its just what we do in our ceremonies. In the olden' days "I don't think all warriors took off their eagle feathers when they were travelling and eating on the run." Modern times call for new protocol.
