"Native Vocab"

What are some curious words or phrases frequently/over used either in your family or tribe from the English language?? Or maybe they're not even from any particular language.....somehow they just came to be.

EX.

I always wondered why the older folks always use the word "heavy set" instead of "fat".

Also I wonder why folks around here always use the word "scads" instead of "many".

Another thing that's real common around here among the youth is saying "suuuuuuuuuuhhhhhh", as a cue for "disapproval".

Oh yeah.....I wonder why the old timers say "so and so really got 'worked over'," instead of "so and so really got 'beat up'!"

OMG, I say "Suh" all the time!! And I didn't realize everybody doesn't say "scads" just scads of times.

I always wondered where "ain't" came from. Is it a contraction between aye (like in aye, aye, cap't) and not? And did "enit" come from "ain't it"?

Chay, FF! Something to mull over, huh? What's "mull"? And where did "huh" come from?

Yeah.... there are certain words or phrases that I associate with different people and ususally give em a rough time over. Won't mention the persons name ..... but they say... "Got Dang" and "whay" :taunting: :rofl2:

There is this one otter person (won't mention any names here..lol)that follows some of my posts with a "you ain't right or "ow.":Tongue :chatter:

Then there is Delia that says "ever sick" when I tell her something..

Leonard Malatare has his " it ain't gonna get no gooder than this eh?" when he is MC'ing.

There are some I know that say..... "you wanna go with? " or "you wanna come with?" :Thinking... go or come with what? where? huh???? :Tongue

Another one, Chop Chop, for hurry up and do it quick..
My Dad used this one.. maybe he picked it up when he was in the Navy back in the 40's.

and A-#1 OK.. for the best!

When you ask someone how they are (mostly country folks) they say Fair to Middlen... this comes from back in the cotton/tobacco days.. used to grade cotton/tobacco at market.

Ok I do it to my kid (and the dog) cause my mom always did it to us, and i have heard my aunties do it and my grandma... but it's this kinda broken aa aa aa when a kid is doing something they are'nt supposed to and you want them to just stop, freeze in their tracks right there and then... like say a toddler is picking up a very expensive glass knick knack and mom would come rushing over going" aa aa aa aa aa " in a distressed no no tone, really fast too. Actually it sounds like a bluejay cry LOL!
