Columbus day is coming up and some people really get out and speak their minds around this time. Here in Denver they have a parade which used to be the Columbus parade but now it is just the Italian pride parade which honors Christopher Columbus. They have alot of events leading up to monday like a unity march for all the Natives. Some people can really get out of hand. One year things even turned violent. Alot of Natives were fighting, getting tear gased and arrested. I usually sit at home and watch the news. What do you guys do in your cities during this time of year?

The tribe I'm employed with has us work on that day and gives us Native American day off w/ holiday pay ! :Thumbs

holiday - ... but am goin to a social dance to pw and to celebrate the fact we still live and kickin'... hayyy i'm not complaining... get to dance AND still get paid for work!?

My tribe changed Columbus day to Cheifs Day, in honor of our past cheifs, and would you believe the white people that worked for the tribe had the nerve to say THEY were offended. *L* madness

LOL... yes CP I can believe that as we have the same type working for us, sad but true. We don't really see it very much but we hear the complaints sometimes cuz as tribal members we get Traditional Leave to attend traditional events/ceremonies, then I heard them complain that what is traditional to us is not traditional to them and they should get some type of similar leave. They always forget that they work for us and are on a reservation, etc...

this reminds me of the opening of the museum in DC about 2 weeks ago, my Aunt went out there and one of my brothers actually works out there in DC with the Indian Senates office and well I guess they were walking by the big statue of Christopher Columbus and my aunt asked my brother if he ever thought about throwing rocks at that statue! LOL :Chatter...My aunt is so hilarious. :Chatter

Boy this gets old. I don't care who celebrates this day. I don't. Wanna protest? Picket JC Penneys for selling cheap towels on that day. They're about the only ones aside from Italians who celebrate this day.
Washington's and Lincoln's birthdays are also holidays. Independence Day is celebrated (read the whole declaration which refers to natives as savages). What's the difference?

I work for "The Tribe" and we are working, but we observe "Navajo Nation Sovereignty Day" in April.

I'm waiting to see what the kids bring home from school...
