I agree with Burbs that at the end of grade 11 would be the time to apply - I want to suggest that you look at some of the application forms now though - so you have an idea of what kinds of information they want - so you can begin to save it and will have kick *** records when it comes time to apply.
If you wait you may find it to be like finding all your receipts when it's time to fill out income tax forms - a pain in the butt! |

A majority of scholarship committees will be specific on who can apply such as seniors in high school or freshman college students, etc. Most scholarships will need a a cummulative GPA during high school, so it's best to wait until maybe at the end of your junior year, but it doesn't hurt to start early if it's possible.

Ok - I need help with some research in scholarships...
Her loves....cheerleading, reading, her culture, talking, clothes, family. (Feel like I am writing an application to be an extra in a movie or something, lol!) I know there are so many out there - is there any one that has stood out for some of you?? Your advice and help is so appreciated...

do you think she would qualify for financial aid....like the pell grant and what not? what about her tribal scholarships...is she elgible to get one?? they have like a book on scholarships out there, you could check with the local financial aid office or even look online. :D I'll get back at you with more information!!! :)
I would advise to hold off any type of education loans as long as you can!!! Paying them back is a bytch *L* Also, if she can attend a community college first then transfer to a 4 year university will DEFINETELY cut down on tuition costs! Like she could get her general studies courses out of the way at a community college and then transfer to the 4 year if she's planning on getting a BS or BA degree ..that way she won't pay as much at a Community College versus a 4 year university ....just my 2 cents :D

you should have them all researched before 11th grade then all you have to do is go through the application process by then. If you try to do both at once just misery just misery

The Gates Milenium Scholarship is one of the best scholarships out there right now
http://www.gmsp.org/ at this point - she should concentrate on keeping her GPA high most scholarships will require a 3.0 GPA or higher (usually higher) and then...her interests show that she's well rounded. when you put together her portfolio w/ her activities inside and outside school - keep track of the hours she spends in each. like if she's on a cheerleading squad or something, and she has 2 hr. practices each night, keep a log in her portfolio. some colleges ask for a list of activities w/ the amount of hours you spend in each....it was hard for me to remember how many hours i spent on activities from frosh year OH YEP....and the PSAT's are coming up:)....sophomore year is a good time to take them...she may qualify for a National Merit Scholarship |

Thanks for that...she is involved in cheerleading and track, and theatre, so all of that should be kept track of, huh? Thanks for that advice...:)

You might try looking as early as next year. Don't know if North Carolina gives the PSAT in the tenth grade but they give it and another standardized test out here (can't remember the name). Anyway, success on both tests offer scholarship possiblilities.
