I'm ready for Prairie Chicken to be a regular category at every powwow
Aren't you?
But without a doubt alot of families and committees sure know how to through some pretty kewl prairie chicken specials. Wellpinit, courtesy of George Flett, puts on a pretty good shindig for the chickens, however they've yet to incorporate it into a regular dance category. So, I'm glad to see some of the bigger budgeted-wows puttin' up the bucks for the category. So, is this category becoming a regular thang in your neck of the woods?

I know what you mean ntownn8ive!!!
It gets old dancing against Northern Mens traditional or Grass dancers... And there is alot more powwows starting to put on specials, BUT, with that sometimes you dont have the right people that know how to judge them either. Went to a powwow a few weeks back, and they had a chicken special, just as they did last year, and they made sure that you had to have a chicken outfit in order to get in it; it went pretty good. But this year, when it came time for the special, they let grass dancers in it, and there only ended up being on (1) chicken in it!! ME!! My thing is if you are going to have a chicken special, then have a chicken special, not a grass dance special; and make sure there are those there who know how to judge prairie Chicken dancing... But it is on the rise, and I hope like you said, that alot more powwows will add this in as a cateogory.... |

As much as it pains me to, I have to agree with ntownn8ve. It starting to look a lot like the 80's when there were grass dancers dancing with either traditional or fancy.

Anyways, bringing my thread to the top, aye!
Muckleshoot had a prairie chicken/round bustle category but I didn't stay around to see who won. And sorry HB, I'm runnin' it that way to at the powwow over here.....combined......at least it's not like in the ol' days when the grass dancers and the fancy dancers were combined!

That would be nice to see prairie chicken dance category at every powwow. I know that Heart Butte, Browning, Stand OFF, Siksika, Brocket, and Rocky Boy have had chicken dance categories for years, really good old time chicken dancers came from these places. BUt chicken dance specials are still nice to have also. Ecspecially if you have judges that know what they are judging. Thats were u can find really good chicken dancers at the places i listed.
