Hello, I have a question for you all:) I did have a cloth dress that was made in almost the exact same style as a buckskin dress, right down to the long fringe on the cape, and underdress. I know it is a cloth dress done in the style of a bucskin dress, but if someone was to dance in that dress, what category would they dance in?

Also have you ever seen someone dance in a cloth dress, done in buckskin style?

I seen some ladies w/cloth tops and buckskin skirts but not the entire thing in cloth.

I have seen them in all cloth. cloth findge too (instead of buckskin)
very odd. I have seen them mostly in Missouri.....

I have no idea what tribe that is, I was just wondering if anyone had seen that before. I mean if it is a cloth dress, you would dance cloth, rather then buckskin? Hmmmm! As to your post Superndngirl, not now:p Can't afford the northern set... *broke student**hehe*;)

Here in Oregon there is usually only a women's traditional category, so women in buckskin and cloth dance together. However, there are women who wear a buckskin skirt, cloth yoke w/ buckskin fringes - when there are separate categories they usually dance with the buckskins. Then sometimes you see women wearing a cloth t-dress with buckskin fringes, and they usually dance in the cloth category. I guess it depends on how much of a percentage your dress is made up of buckskin vs. cloth.

What in the world are you tryna say? lol...If it looks like a buckskin style dress..northern or southern...dance Buckskin or Northern Tradish...Just because its made out of clothe doesnt make it a cloth dress.ESPECIALLY!!! if it looks just like a buckskin dress. and personally Ive NEVER seen anything like that...Id be to ashamed to wear it but hey you never know..might start a trend or just look goofy...but hey~what do I know.....

Sorry if I confused you Sometimes I have no idea on what I am trying to say;) Yes that is what I meant, wether a person would dance in traditional or cloth based on what the dress looked like.. aiyee thanks:D

Usually the Womens' Northern Traditional contests are not divided up by cloth or buckskin, we all go in together. The only time that I see the categories divided is when there are Womens Southern categories also. And then in the Cloth division, the Northern and Southern women dance together.
Dresses are so contemporary these days but I have seen the cloth tops used in place of the fully beaded tops usually in the Summer when it's really hot. But when it's time for contests, the beaded tops get put on again. I've wanted to try something like that cuz the beaded tops sure get heavy after a while!! :)

HI EVERYONE! I'M NEW TO THIS SITE AND I ENJOYED READING THE RESPONSES AND HOPE U ALLOW ME TO THROW MY TWO CENTS WORTH IN......
FROM WHAT I'VE SEEN I THINK THE CLOTH CATAGORY WAS IMPLIMENTED FOR THE TRIBES THAT HAVE CLOTH DRESSES AS THEIR TRADITIONAL WEAR...SUCH AS HO-CHUNKS, CROW ELK TEETH, ETC.....
BUT THE OTHER DRESSES THAT ARE CLOTH TOPS AND BUCKSKIN BOTTOMS ARE COOL TOO CUZ HEY...AS LONG AS YOUR OUT THEIR DANCIN AND TEARIN IT UP-IT'S ALL GOOD!:)

There are many women in my area who have worn the cloth dresses with buckskin fringe. Some of the dresses are really beautiful! The applique work on the dresses are ace!! Since I'm working on my beaded top, I wear a cloth dress with the buckskin fringes. It's a dress I made myself with lotsa luvin and respect.

Usually, they combine all styles together. If I had to choose, I would probably go into the Northern Buckskin... Just because I'm not used to dancing to Southern songs. There aren't very many Southern Cloth dancers except for one or two Iroquois ladies who dance southern in their Iroquois Style dresses.

Ive seen womens northern tradish wearing a regular northern tradish outfit just that the top was made of fabric with lots of applique. I dont see anything wrong with it. If its done right then it looks pretty good. I wouldnt be *embarrassed or ashamed* either (by the way I dont dance tradish) but I would consider using an appliqued top until I could bead the whole thing.

I guess it depends on if the work is done neatly and powwow kewlie... but I think at least the accessories should be fully beaded, for the hair earrings, bracelets, leggins moccs...

If its done right then it probably would look pretty good too.

My opp on wether cloth dress's that are made to look like buckskin dresse's are not gooofy! some are so pretty laddies are going home with designs in their heads ready to sew i have three dress's with buckskin fring and my last dress looks like a southern stile buckskin most people dont even know until I see them looking close at my dress and I say no it's not buckskin with a smile. all have very detailed applique and matching shawls and someday all will have their own set of bead work now someday i will bead a dress like my white one but as long as im keeping my little family in outfits the cloth with applique works for me in my area im known for the dress's i wear and people ask me alot of times what dress will I be wearing and they share with me which one is their favorite wich is kind of neat it opens up the crowd to ask questions and I get to meet new people i would of probly not of gotten to meet. Just my opp not tring to be rude k

What kind of cloth are you talking about? Does it look like buckskin, or ultrasuede. How about the medallions are they beaded or are they cloth too?
