Mox
I know there are both northern and southern dancers on this thread. What type of moccasin soles do you have? Have you ever worn soft sole moccasins?
Have you seen other dancers without the leggin's (moccasins only)?

I'm a cheater...I either take apart slippers or sandals and sew that on my mocs...that way my feet don't get hurt. If I don't do that, I'll cut out a trace of my feet from saddle leather and slip that inside my mocs and put some Dr. Schol's in there. Nice and Comfy...and All Terrain.

I wear southeastern woodland style soft-sole moccasins.
Like this: Martha Berry: Cherokee Beadwork Artist though my beadwork isn't anywhere near that good. Insoles work nice to help cushion the feet. Some of the ladies from tribes up this way, Ho-Chunk for example, don't wear leggings. For some reason I'm not getting the "insert image" to work correctly, but follow this link: http://www.powwows.com/galleries/sho...hp?photo=22493 You'll see that the lady on the extreme right is not wearing leggings. Note the lady on the extreme right.

I can't recall seeing anyone recently without leggings.
I do remember seeing pictures, taken by my grandpa and mom in northwestern NE and SD, from the late forties and the fifties of ladies in buckskin dresses, pantyhose, and mocs. However, very very few of these pictures seemed to have been taken in the context that I would diffinitively identify as powwows and other Native events. Most seemed to be performances at fairs and town hertiage days. |

I'm a cheater too. I used some isotoners as the bottoms.. They are pretty comfy and when they wear out I can just take them off and put some new ones on.

my wife has both and she does not use leggins with any of her southern cloth sets and she puts the arch supports from old sneekers in for added comfort. In fact most of the gals I see do not. The leggins are definately a bit tribal specific (or even family specific).

Oh yea! I wear my otoe mocs and they dont have leggings that go w/them. Annette Rice wears her otoe Mocs and so does Phammy Knifechief. I'm sure there's countless other Otoes that do it too but thats all that comes to mind.
Here's some legging-less dancers. http://www.powwows.com/galleries/sho...hp?photo=24481 http://www.powwows.com/galleries/sho...hp?photo=24493

I wear both leggings and mocs depending on the weather and my mood. I only wore mocs when I was little, but my Commanche mom made me a pair of leggings when I was a teenager. I think both are acceptable in my neck of the woods since I see both types worn all the time. Super, I love your mocs.
