Question Missouri River Buckskin Pattern

Me and my mom initially decided to try to save some money and make my buckskin, so we bought Missouri River's pattern for "Plains Indian Buckskin Dress". However, now that we have the hides and everything, we're both a little nervous. We have my Aunt's buckskin to sort of go off of, but we were wondering if it's worth it just to have it made.

Has anyone else tried this pattern? Or has anyone ever made their own dress?

I have this pattern. I have not used it; nor have I ever made a southren dress (just northern). I just got it because I was curious. I have found with this brand of patterns you will have to make slight alterations to improve the fit.

I do understand the cold sweats that come as you face an expensive hide, while holding a sharp instrument in your hand. I would suggest you go buy some muslin. Cut out and sew the pattern, then adjust it to fit you. If the dress is yikesville in the muslin, likely it will be ugly or poor fitting in buckskin. If you have to make changes to improve the fit, take apart the altered muslin dress and use that as your pattern.

If your hides are commerical tanned, do stretch them before beginning. Some hides have been folded or bunch for so long, they will stretch a lot. Personally, I always take a few minutes in prayer before beginning cutting -- it helps me anyway, LOL.

To be perfectly honest, if you're that worried, find someone who knows what they're doing to hold your hand. If you mess up, it will be money and embarassment for everyone to see. Not good.

I applaud you for choosing to make your dress, I do however agree that you should fing some one to hold your hand. It is always best to learn from someone, there are teachings that you will learn in the process.
