I am not defending the Buckskinlady, but, she made no mention of getting loaded. She also didn't mention drinking at all at powwows. She did mention having "A" drink.
Is everyone here to sit in judgement? Are we all perfect? Dang. BTW, I don't know this lady. |

Gee whiz!!! Where is this coming off that I "booze" while making dresses????!!! I said I did it one time in a joking manner and I said " Don't do it!"!!!!!!!! AND I DON'T!!
And when I do give an opinion about something, like machine sewing for example, I always say,"That's just my opinion!!!!" Take or leave it !! Don't go attacking the person for their opinion. You should have read my reaction (and opinion) when someone (about six months ago) said they glued the fringes into the side seams of the skirt!! |

I for my part didn't say anything like that.
I just wrote my opinion in general! Everyone has to decide that for themselves! See ya!

not to drink...
Today it seems as if morals don't count. Also powwows are becoming more commericalized and the true meaning is being lost. When I was younger my friends would go smoke up in their outfits or would go in the dark somewhere to get a sip. I see it at all these big powwows. It is so disappointing because it is the same thing every weekend. People mess up hotel rooms from a party and give Native people a bad name just from partying. I am only one person and I do not feel it is right but that is only my opinion and I can not force someone else to change. Look at most of the top dancers that don't even have to work they go from powwow to powwow, drinking or doing drugs even the singers of the big name groups all do this. Even my husband would sneak off to do drugs. but it has become a normal thing. What happened to the powwow of if someone is under the influence of alcohol or drugs they would be asked to leave....

Can we please stick to the forum guidelines, of no personal attacks.
We all have opinions. We all have reasons why, or why not we do certain things in our own personal lives. While we do have the "right" to say what we think and feel we do not have an "obligation" to do so. There are alot of people on this board and alot of differing opinions, that for one is a reason why I like it so well. But I do not like people coming on to force opinions as a mean to control or belittle a person or THEIR thoughts or opinions. So how bout we all go back to our corners to re-group and end the bickering?

I don't think I totally lost my cool to where I have to "regroup" or go to my netural corner.
If you read back to the posts, I am just sharing my thoughts and opinions. This is by no means a way to "control" or belittle ANYONE, including buckskin lady. I think if someone feels as strongly enough about a subject they should be able to voice their opinion. So............no more bickering from me :23: :Quiet P.S. Buckskin Lady............I checked out your website. You do some very nice work. Can I order a dress? |

When I used to drink, I'd always make sure I had no contact with any of my regalia, especially my feathers, while I was drinkin, drunk, or hanging. Its soooooo important to have that respect for your clothes, doncha think?
I really take all that into consideration! Even this one time, after one of my ex's got a new girlfriend and I saw them together and I jus got extremely sad and angry, I undressed because I wasnt in the right state of mind. I figured I wasnt bringing anything good to the circle or to my clothes so then I changed, put all my stuff away in my the car. THEN got drunk *aye* Gaaaaah! I think its wrong to dress or dance while under the influence. If ya wanna party and smoke, thats kew, thats your trip, but theres a time and place for it. When you dance, you should be clear headed and be positive, and dance with good thoughts.

Hello!! I'm new to powwows.com and have been reading a lot of interesting things. This particular subject has brought out a lot of really strong feelings and opinions. That's good guys keep having clear strong minds!:39: As I have enjoyed reading this post I have also had some good laughs as some of the comments were very funny. :Chatter
Myself, I am a traditional person and partake in our ceremonies at home. I go to powwows and see them as social occasions and to have fun. I dance Women's Northern Traditional. I choose not to drink or be around people that do because that's the life that I want to live as I think that is the way our Creator intended us to live. To finally get to the point and to answer the question, No, I believe you should not mix drinking/drugging with powwows. Because being in the Circle of dancing, being around eagle feathers and being around people that carry their own medicine (for personal protection) cannot be disrespected and desecrated like that. Okay, I said my 2 cents worth. :) :) :) |
