Question Where would you suggest I research?

Hi everyone! I was wondering where you think a good place is to start researching beadwork styles and designs and the clothing styles of traditional items. Do you have any great books or web-sites to recommend? I am looking towards Lakota and Mohawk (as that is what I and my husband are).

Thanks for the help!

There's a Yahoo group dedicated to beading. I'd asked about Iroquois Designs meself as I'm Mohawk and the book I have on beading has a wopping 1 Iroquois design in it ;-)

I ***think*** the groups name is indianbeadzwork or something like that

If you want to see a wide variety of outfits, check out the photo gallery at www.gatheringofnations.com . MANY different outfits to see there!

There's an old book thats been reprinted many times called Iroquois Crafts by Carrie Lyford that has line drawings of traditional Iroquois beading patterns. There is a similar sized book called Bead and Quillwork of the Western Sioux which has some Lakota designs. This would be the easiest way to get a general description of historic beadwork for these two peoples. Beyond that, go to the museums, go to powwows. Study the old stuff and study the contemporary stuff until you get a feel for the colors, composition and scale that makes something Lakota or Mohawk and not Apache or Crow.
