patterns patterns patterns....dang it just bead something.
Planning a project can be good but with your first beading just do something small to get a feel for it. I dont graph out anything. Maybe everyone will say that is crazy but works for me.

I agree with Tallman, for your first project just do something small, with a simple pattern to get the feel. The first piece I did was a hatband and it turned out ok, I did graph it out first but it was VERY simple.
Good luck, & happy beading, OA_Dancer05

Hey, 6 beads wide is a good start. Welcome to the wonderful world of looming. I love it. If you want patterns/ideas (some of us do like to use them) check out counted cross stitch patterns- they're ready to go-all you need to do is pick your bead colors. If you just google bead loom patterns, some of the sites that sell looms have free patterns, too.

Working without a pattern takes a bit of practice & just knowledge of how the shapes come together. So yep, start with the patterns, then make your own & then you'll be doing it without a pattern.
When I make my own patters i draw what I want & then draw a super tiny graph over it & then translate into a larger easier to read pattern, especially for more organic shapes. I also find patterns useful if I'm beading something very large cause that's when I'm more likely to stay up late beading & the pattern helps me keep track when I'm tired & should be in bead but just want to bead "a little longer" Have fun, it just keeps getting easier. Suzze Oh yeah, whenyour making your own patterns keep in mind that for an accurate translation of the shapes you want, the beads are a little longer then they are wide |

I'm really enjoying this free beading pattern software: http://easybeadpatterns.com It was easy to install - use any online picture and it will "patternize" it for you. |

This is amazing, thanks. I downloaded it tonight & tried it out, here I am 2 hours later. I'm putting all my designs on this. It's great for making your own cause you see what it will look like & work out all the kinks. I am so hooked, expect to see me here alot less...lol Suzze |

I downloaded that software, I've been using bead-graph paper. This seems like a great find. I like to look at old beadwork and traditional patterns (usually Lakota), then use different elements I like. I also try to do my own patterns. I find beading can be addicting. I find myself doing just a few more rows when I should have been in bed.
I would think that mumof3horrors knows to use bees wax on the threads when beading. thanks for all the info. |
