Beading on white buckskin
Sekoh
how the heck can i Bead on white buck skin without staining the leather? ....man i just look at it and i get a stain...iv'e wrapped it in plastic wore gloves lightly penciled in pattern but the leather cleaning ball seems to abrade leather ...a young woman whom iv'e seen grow up on the Pow-Wow trail asked me to bead her new dress her dad and uncle just bought her. they dropped of the skirt for me to start 40+ years beading this my first time working on pure white leather...any suggestions would be a god send.

Its a bit of a challenge but when im beading on white buckskin I always wash my hands, even the nateral oils in your skin can make it dirty! in no way am I saying you are not wahsing your hands ok lol , when I put my project dow to do someting else I always wash real good before picking it back up. but it wont alwys be white , my boots were white as can be when I got them back in 1990 but now they are a bit on the cream colored side and i take very good care of them, so take it easy and enjoy beading!!!

I work on white hide all the time. Even though most do turn cream with wear, I do try to leave it as clean as I can.
I cover my work surface with a clean white sheet and keep the beadwork covered with another sheet when I'm not working. Since I lean up against my work sometimes, I wear a white apron to keep from rubbing color off clothing. I wrap fringes in plastic or cloth. If I have a laarge area that will not be covered with beads, if possible I make a clean muslin scak to cover it, and use a few carefully placed tacking stitches to hold it in place. I wash my hands and arms before touching. I keep clean muslin rags around to cover an area if my arms are going to be on it too often. And I tie my hair back to keep it off my work. I also try to plan my beading so my hands spend most of the time over an area I am going to bead or have already beaded. If you make marks on the hides, use something that doesn't smudge. I use a hard artist's pencil, like a 3H. If you do get a smudge, sometimes they can be removed by carefully scraping the surface. Then use a baby brush to smooth the area in. This will help hide any surface texture changes. As we say in the lab, don't eat, drink, or smoke while working. I can tell you about a friend who knocked a coke over on a nearly finished northern dress... |

Man those are some great tips... I was just going to say, make sure your area and your hands are clean at all times and the suggest large areas be beaded on something else then tacked onto the dress later, but OL already covered that. I've only beaded small white moccasins before.. never anything of great size. I'm very scared of working with white buckskin.. the white white stuff anyhow... most of the white I use is already off color to begin with.

Sekoh
thank you all ...youze guyz (best New York Accent) are the greatest. though iv'e had to revamp spare bedroom into a surgical clean room just for this project.i do most of my beading on a wally-world folding table in front of tv. following your advice iv'e started the trim working in a 3" square opening in the sheets on tissue paper till i can find what Wyo suggested. all my wife had on hand was interfacing it was hard to tear away. the tissue paper is a bit awkward another delema to face is two small spots cleaned with one of those buckskin cleaning balls it abradded the leather a bit, i dont know if Pow-wow.com knows how much this web site and these dedicated people affect people.in real life it's humbling........ even though im doing this for free..i didnt have the heart to call and say .....sorry kid this otta my league and ohh by the way i ruined your skirt,,,,,,,,,,,,, I all i can say is bless you.. to all who post .......onen PS kuddos for the edit button..EH

I've never beaded on white buckskin, but I have embroidered with white silk thread on white linen-scary. I kept a damp rag nearby at all times and would just wipe my hands every few minutes. The tear away stabilizer is a cool idea. I wish I would have thought about it when I was doing that tablecloth.

When beading on white leather you should never use a pencil to draw your patterns instead use a scratch awl to mark them this will prevent smudging. Remember to keep your hands clean and that should do it.

Beading on white skins
Thanks yall for all the tips, I was gonna cheat and do a loom design for my granddaughter, partly because she's only 5 and because it easy to do Choctaw designs on a loom.
Now I think I will give it a shot. V
