I'm pretty sure that the beaded ones are usually loomed, and the sequined ones are done with a backing... I don't make them so I can't really tell you that much.. but if you know how to do loomwork, then you can make them... and theres' a thread somewhere on how do do the sequin work.. I think it's still stickied.

chokers
I agree with Blackbear at lot are done on looms and are beaded with small bugle beads for the main section. There's a good reference book.written by an Ndn..."Beads to buckskin". she has a book that deals with chokers/earrings among her other books. She has lots of designs that she shares and her instructions are easy to follow. She shows you how to build and incorporate your own design.
Her name is Peggy Sue Henry, she has 11 book, volume 4 address chokers/earrings. She covers other stitches like the brick stitch, great for your matching earrings. If you buy her books from Oglala Lakota College you will pay the right price, a lot of collectors hike up the price on her books, cause I don't think they are still being printed. But Oglala college has them and buying direct from them helps the college students. Here's their website hope it help www.OLC.EDU

I think looming is best since I'm a bloomin' loomin' fool!! (Sorry)LOL!! If you do loom one, check out www.rubysbeadwork.com for her beaded bead and loop closures. It's a free tute and I am hooked on them for the stuff I make. You can use 1 if the piece is light or however many you need to balance the weight of the choker. They are super easy to do and since I started using those, I just like the look better on the jewelry I make.

My choker for my older bead set is loom beaded, and its the only thing I ever made on a loom because I didn't like it! I kept messing it up...so...no more for me. But I just loom beaded that and then backed it with foamy board to make it a little stiffer and closed it with a tie.
The other one I also applique beaded and sewed rhinestones on, just like any other applique piece. I didn't back it with anything hard, just sewed leather on the back and used 2 hook and eye closures. I'm making a new one right now and I'm going to do the same- without backing- because i think the foamy board backing one makes me sweat! I think because the foam is plastic or something. Anyway as you can tell, you can do it different ways, basically whatever you like. Good luck! |

when I measure a choker for me, I put a string or whatever around my neck, then measure that and I add an inch, because I don''t like things real tight to my neck. Remember that the closure will also add to the lenght. to add a drop to a loomed choker, figure where you want it to be, weave the thread back to that point and coming out the bottom bead, add the drop, weave thread back through and finish it however you finish your work-everybody finishes differet. Superndngyrl, that's a beautiful choker!! One day, I want to learn the applique way of beading-along with a thousand other bead things!LOL!

I made my choker really wide and I think if I edge beaded it, it would have hurt. haha so I didn't. But if you make it smaller than edge beading would be a nice touch. But really its up to you because you don't really notice that much. Cuz of your hair and hair ties etc.
