Old Delaware bandolier bag on ebay
In my continuing search for pictures of nifty old bandolier bags (I'm planning one for Hubby), I found this on Ebay. The photos and detail are amazing, and I thought you all would like to take a look too......

WOW!!!! Those pictures jump started MY morning, LOL! I put them in my favorites bo. I stayed up until late last night, working on Hubby's bag, and trying to teach myself applique stitch. Makes you appreciate the ladies that made the old ones. I am using Martha Berry's pattern, that I ordered from her site. By the Way---she is VERY helpful. I have asked several questions and she is always very helpful. Nice lady!

Eap7,
I agree, it is outrageous how these priceless artifacts suddenly have prices, and heafty ones at that. Legal battles are a tough thing. For what it's worth, I think this bag is most likely Shawnee, not Delaware. I'll probably get all kinds of hate mail for saying that, but from what I have studied, that's my opinion. I wouldn't argue too much if someone really had a case for it being Delaware. Fatty, I saw this bag the first night at Billings in the hotel. Somehow I got the energy to stay up a little longer if you know what I mean. |

Thank you VERY much! I bookmarked the site....LOTS of KOOL stuff to look at! The designs make me want to sit and draw and draw. I'm like you--I can't afford the real thing, so I am trying to make my own.

I'd gladly claim it as Shawnee.....! (:o)))))) It blows a alot of my preconceived ideas of what a bag "should" beright out of the water, and I love it! The use of the stripe from the end of a blanket is a wonderful "make do" idea, and in George Winters book on Indiana Indians from the early 1800's, the lady Delawares and Miamis and Shawnees all thought that the square paisley square scarves were all the rage...so why not put them on a bag?

Beadman, why do you think its Shawnee? That's interesting. I honestly do not know how to tell the difference. I took some pictures of the Delaware bandolier bags at the NMAI museum during their grand opening festival. They look relatively similar but I think they are newer than this one. We probably will never know, but it sure is pretty.

Most of the Delaware shoulder bags I've seen were fully beaded. The bag portion of the ebay item looks Delaware but the bead designs on the strap do not. The designs look more like ones found on bags from the Southeast (Creek, Shawnee, Miccosuki, etc). Southeastern bags often have a large triangular flap covering the pouch portion. Whether the ebay bag is Delaware or not, I don't know, but in my mind it does not look "typical" Delaware.
Wow, $104,000! Somebody's got MONEY! |

The first rule when looking at old Indian pieces is to examine the form. The shape, size, and layout of the bag leans more toward Shawnee, as Czechy pointed out, the triangular flap is seen more on Deleware and less on Shawnee, but that in itself is not a signifying characteristic. The fully beaded bags (both Shaw and Del) are a later type than this partially beaded example. One should not look first at the decoration or designs to determine tribal origin.
There is not a lot of documentation nor a great number of examples of this type of bag in order to make astute assumptions. Having looked at a lot of this stuff fairly closely it just has a more Shawnee feel in my humble opinion. But like I said earlier, if someone want's to argue Delaware, I'm not putting up a fight. Wish I could be more articulate, maybe this will be my next research project? It's overdue! |

If you DO decide to make this bag a research project, PLEASE make sure to make it available to us. I think it would be very interesting
