transferring designs
I was wondering how everyone transfers their designs onto whatever they are beading on. I usually have it drawn out on paper first, and have all the measurements, then get out my handy dandy ruler and pencil and try to do it again on the canvas. Does anyone have any better/easier ways of doing this?

They have the transparent quilting template sheets that you can buy from Wally World. You can trace your pattern and cut it out with a razor/knife but afterthat you have a template that you can use a couple of times. They're about two bucks or so and you get about three sheets.

Depends on what I'm beading and how I'm beading it. I've used tailor's chalk, sharpie markers, dress maker's tracing paper and one of those spikey wheel things (technical term - I can sew but it's my cousin Linda that knows all the proper terms for things) and regular (carbon) tracing paper.
I've stapled the design paper right onto the fabric and beaded it to the fabric, gently pulling it off from around the outer edges when I was done. I've put my fabric over any number of light sources from the top of a lampshade to a well lit window, put the design in back and traced it. There are iron on transfer sheets you can print out from your computer too. They even got ones that glow in the dark (which I haven't tried yet - but how intriguing is that?)! I do most of my designing on the computer but have only done the transfer sheet thing once. Someone gave me a couple of sheets to try and it worked out good. |

I do mostly Plains geometric stuff and I dont ever draw out my pattern anymore on the piece. I usually lay out my design on the 'puter, then when beading I draw a center line, then start from the middle and work my way out just by counting beads and stitches. In, my experience, drawing the pattern out on the piece made my stitches get loosey-goosey as I apted to bead to the pattern instead of watching the spacing of my stitches.

Just about the only thing I do in applique is prairie floral stuff. I draw the design element on file folder then sew it on the cloth where I want it. I use BIG stitches about 1-2", just enough to hold it in place. I then bead the outline right on the edge of the pattern. When the outline is done I cut the big stitches and remove the pattern, then just fill in the design.
I don't do a lot of laxy stitch, but Randyinkc pretty much summed up what I do. Lazy (or lane) stitch patterns are pretty much determined by the technique, same thing with peyote or gourd. Most people don't draw these designs out. |

For lazy stitch, I put my design elements on graph paper but don't actually mark my leather or canvas with anything except the center line and the base starting line. The rest is just a matter of counting from the center point.
For applique, which I usually do on cloth or Pellon, I draw the design onto a lightweight fusible web and then iron that onto my base fabric. If the thing will be fully beaded then it goes on the top. If I am doing partial beading on velvet, for example, then the design gets fused to the wrong side. For peyote and brick stitch, I mostly do the designing on the fly. |

I photocopy my design, tack it on to canvas and then tear off the remaining paper afterwards.

if im beading on velvet i use rip a way stitchpaper and baste it to the velevet and when i get done i tear the unbeaded part away. if im beadeding on crib padding or other stuff that will be fully beaded, i either trace my pattern with carbon paper, or i use spray adhesive(sometimes a kiddes glu stick if im at work) slap it down to the stuff and baste it
