Good luck, cuz unless you're using kevlar thread (do they make such a thing?), sinew or wire, I've found that bugle beads have a nasty habit of cutting through the threads as the moccassins (or other garments you put them on) flex.

Bad idea, and of all pieces... Mocs. They get too mcuh wear, tear, and bending around. Your bugles will cut the threads, or bust into pieces themselves. Only use bugles on pieces that are more likely to stay flat.

I fully agree with BTW & WW, it SOUNDS pretty but not the best choice, I made a set of hair ties when I was about 13 or 14 using bugles they still look good but I remember having a tiem of it, with the bugles cutting my thread, and I noticed a bit of fading going on aswe ll.

You can always PAINT the designs using very shinny acrilic paints. A friend of mine does this and you can hardly tell if they are realy beaded. The detail is just a good as if they were beaded. And after they are worn and danced in...and at a distance, it is hard to tell if they are beaded or not.

Au contraire!! Bugle beads are an excellent addition to mocs. My bfren's mocs made for him by a friend have bugles all throughout the design. However they are bordered by at least one seed bead on each side.
My grandson's mocs (in my avy) that I made have a sunburst design with bugles and they are well worn, but the beads have hung in there. I waxed doubled 0 thread and it's held up great. The only beads I ever had break were the extra long bugle type beads - like an inch or so. I would say that was cheating. But I only had one day to make my daughter some mocs and leggings. And it was awful commercial buckskin that I couldn't even hardly get a needle through. But I made a sunburst design with regular and extra long bugles. It actually held up great the first year, only breaking one of the extra long beads on the mocs. The next year a couple more broke and did break through the thread. But all the regular bugles are still hanging in there and none have broke on the leggings, probably due to the stiffness. Here's what I DON'T like about bugles: When they get wet the inside of the bead tends to tarnish. It changes the color slightly. If I made mocs with bugles again, I think I'll seal it with something to keep the moisture out. |

I've seen a couple of moc and legging sets made entirely of bugles. If you use the small ones and do a careful, neat job, it can look great.
Yes, there is such a thing as Kevlar thread which is really tough stuff. Its used to sew bullet-proof vests. I highly recommend it for sewing bugles. The only drawback is that you have to use special surgeon's knots to tie it. I know a bead shop in Oregon that carries it. As others have pointed out, most bugles are silver-lined and will eventually fade or tarnish over time. I don't know of any good way to prevent this except to use either the translucent or solid colored bugles rather than the silver lined ones. |

hey, a bugle bead with a seed bead on either side would create a neat effect. ill have to try that.
