Getting Started
I have decided to start my Northern Buckskin...right now just a bit nervios on how to start or where to start. From some of you experience buckskin dancers, or anyone experience in making a Northern Buckskin. I need some help! I have my designs and colors.

Start beading your smaller items first, I would say. Barrette, hair ties, etc... Then you can see how your pattern is going to work out.
As for the yoke, I don't think you should go fully beaded if you're just starting out. For one, like OLChemist said, it will take years probably to finish a fully beaded yoke. Make your dress out of something else. I like satin fused to canvas. Then you can bead some rows on it and continue to add to it. On colors, I was told, if you're light complected - go dark and if you're on the darker side, go light. No offense to anyone!!! |

Breathing!!!
Thanks.
I have taken more than 85 deep breaths! Getting more relaxed and getting started for my long winter up here in the north. I am going to take all the advise that was given and use it. So far, it's pretty good advise...Once again Thank-You! Keep It Coming! |

Like Ol'Chemist, I am also still beading my yoke but at least I am 3/4 done.
Yeah, I agree. Make your smaller accessories first. Then you can wear those with a cloth dress while you are working on your buckskin one. And as mentioned, you'll be more familiar with your designs and colors which will help when you finally work on the larger space of the dress. When you are ready to make the dress itself, cut out your yoke and skirt pieces. But measure, measure and double and triple check everything before taking the deepest breath of all and cutting into the leather! Do your yoke and skirt beading. Then sew all your dress pieces together. Fringe is the last thing to be put on because it just gets in the way otherwise. Please post a pic when its done! |
