I haven't seen that one yet...... not with elastic. Hmmmmm.... probably what I would do would cover them with a material or buckskin casing where the elastic has free movement thru it. I would bead on it then. Good luck.

No, you buy the suspenders that have the solid leather front already, they are only stretch on the back 3/4ths or so of the total length. I would suggest either beading directly on the solid part OR beading a sold part to attach to that on top. Beading indian tanned hide and then attaching would look very nice; then edge it after it has been married to the suspenders.

Saw a "cheapie" made-in-taiwan beaded belt in the women's dept about 2 weeks ago. The warp "threads" were 1/8" black elastic thread, the weft threads were fishing line (?) or some sort of clear nylon type thread 1/8"... the belt was 2 inches wide and the beads were at least 8's and may have been 6's... they were big. The usual "this is an ndn design" in 2 colors:
--< The weft thread was doubled one on each side of the warp but it wasn't like regular loom beading where you go through the beads, push them up through the warp and then go and run the thread back through on the other side. This was two seperate threads going in the same direction through the bead, one on each side of the warp. The threads switched around the last warp thread so that the bottom one became the top thread and vice versa. It stretched about 30% of it's length and the beads repositioned themselves easily. I know, I know ... I'm easily amused. Sitting in an aisle at Target stretching a fake ndn beaded belt repeatedly whilst peering at it going... how dey do dat *grin* We were looking at it because ppl who are wheelies (or ppl who have to sit all the time) need belts that are elasticated or else you end up feeling cut in two in the middle. I'm going to try to adapt something like that for a belt I'm making... but I plan on doing regular beading on the right and left fronts/sides and join them with an elastic bead section in the back. 'twil be an interesting experiment me thinks. |

Mato is absolutely correct on this one. It is how I make dress belts as well. I have done both belts and suspenders and I have seen several in Oklahoma and New Mexico. I have done all my dress belts and suspenders with loom beadwork. You make a tube out of plain cotton cloth (colores can compliment the beadwork) then run the belt or suspenders through it. It should fit tightly. On suspenders, you have to secure it at the top somehow. I always sew it. If the belt or suspenders wear out the beadwork can be easily put onto another one.

B2W....you know those elastic loomed beaded headbands that were popular in the 60's and 70's? My mom had one but she said it was her BELT! That woman was so tiny she could slip it up over her hips to her waist!!!!!
