Good Morning! New member here, so I am bumbling around a bit. I want to learn Eastern Woodland beadwork, but my past attempts are pretty abyssmal. What I would REALLY like to fnd are some classes kinda sorta in or around my area...Brown Co., Indiana. I'd be willing to go outta state for a weekend workshop, if it isn't too far. Are there any like that around? Are there any books you folks would recommend? I want to work up to a bandolier bag...

What specifically are you trying to learn? Eastern Woodlands could cover a lot of territory, about half the USA. Are you looking at Southern Indiana tribal style, great lakes, Try to be more specific, even tribal. Also, what kind of stuff, modern, older style pieces with a new flare, or nearly reproductions of old pieces? I've made a few woven beadwork bandolier bags and can talk about that. Always wanted to do an applique one of some type. |

Thanks, sir! You're right, that DOES cover a lot of ground. We do RevWar reenactments, so the beading is just really simple for that time period, and I can do that. But we do occassional Powwows and ceremonial events and I want Hubby (our tribal cheif) to be able to gussey up a bit, and that would be 19th century stuff. We are Shawnee AND Cherokee, and I've been looking a Cherokee Bandolier bags, pre-Trail of Tears. I can do a good job with embroidery and hand sewing and am a bit of a perfectionist with my hand work, so I think I can do this, IF I can get the right sort of help!
What do you mean by "woven Bags," the ones with the decorations woven on a bead loom? I have one of those looms, but I think it's a bit narrow for a big ; it'll only do pieces just a few inches wide. Or am I thinking wrong? I want my work to look like a piece from the early 1800's. Hubby's people are from the southern Ohio, West Virginia area if that helps. Thanks a bunch...I appreciate the input! Leann Last edited by LeannB; 08-02-2006 at 04:47 PM. |
