Using vintage beads......

Just wondering how many of you use vintage beads...especially like the 18's -22's. What size thread and needles do ya use?

I use 18/o-20/o for gourd stitch for fans. The beads have gotten to be so hard to get, that I only use them on gifts anymore.

But, I just love the colors -- I have over a hundred different colors. You can get really fine detail with them.

I use OO thread and 15/16 needles. I also have twist wire needles I use with colors that have holes that are too small to pass the threaded needle twice. (If you're not familiar with twist wire needles, they are extremely thin and collapse when going through the bead.) I do hate using those wire needles because they snag on the thread so much.

What'cha making? Share?

Below is a handle I made for a friend (I hope I haven't posted this before, LOL):

Oh my gosh........ that is gorgeous work.

I use the 00 and 16's also. Just wondering if there is anything smaller out there. Never tried the twisted........ that may help..... I'll get one. Some of the holes are so small you can hardly see daylight thru em.

100 COLORS!!!! Oh muh damn.......... oh muh dayummmmmmm!! You need to hook a sister up!!

Anyway........ not doing anything as detailed as you stuff, I'm doing doll house miniatures and 1:12 scale work. I did the loom and moccs (newest project). Zeph did the mini birch bark basket. She's also the one that took the great pic!

All that looks great! you guys got some mad skills! and that fan handle is out of this world! Ive got one of those wide flat fans and have been toying with the thought of doing something with the handle and bead each of the dowls that the feathers are in but im not wwanting to take them out to do so but if I dont I would try to bead them. One thing I just made and Im not selling them , I made one of those pink ribbons for breast cancer I used pink tricuts and to fill in I used white tri cuts, its simple but very pretty, its just a little something I wanted to do with the native woman in mind and the few that have seen it all want one either for them selves or they know of one they want to gift to. and Ill probly make a donation even though im not selling any of these.

Talking Small beads and needles

I work in very old beads from the 1780s to 1920s which can range in size from 11/o to 28/o. My thread is 000 nymo for the really small beads and use 15/o size needle which will go threw some of the smallest of beads.

A little trick for those who cannot find the small needles...buy a packet of English 15/o needles which come 25 to the pack and a much better buy than the 16/o at 4 to a pack. In the 25 needles you will find 5 to 10 needles which are smaller than the 16/o needles. It is the eye that needs to go threw the hole of the bead...with thread. I use the smallest of my beads to test the needles and go from there. Oh!, you will find these needles at Buffalo Bulls/Bills? in Billings Mt. talk to Tom Myers who owns the store or a good cleark and they will know what to get you.

I have a picture here of a 22 inch doll I did using 18/o to 24/o on the doll. The one row on the dress is only 4mm and there are the 5 rows to make a lane about 3/4 inch total with about 6 or so beads in each row. The elk teath are 1/4 in. and all hand made.

CC that doll is fantastic..... I wanna see the whole thing.....

When you say you made the elk teeth...... you mean like outta fimo?

I finally ordered some "000" should be here today or tomorrow matter of fact so I'm excited about that. Also good to know about the needles as I can't get "16's" anywhere right now. One place has been back ordered since Oct!!

Wow, what an awesome group of craftsman. OlChemist, your fan handle is fantastic, and Mato Winyan, your minature is so kewl to scale. Cheshire Cat would love to see the whole pic of the doll too! That is simply awesome!

I thought I worked with small enough beads, 15 cuts, but golly. 15's is the smallest I have used, and that's been on tail sticks and a beaded concho belt. Not sure if I want to go smaller.

Hats off to all of you!

What do you all do about thicker leather? Like on the doll CC? Tried my 15 needle and it still didnt' like it too well.
