Hair ties/hair ribbons
Hi, I am looking to find out if anyone knows how to make really easy hair ribbons for my daughter hair. She is a fancy shawl dancer. I read in another thread about making them out of bias tape, but I didn't understand fully how to make them. I would appreciate anyones help.

Are you talking about hair ties that you wrap around the braids? A lot of girls do use bias tape that you can get from any fabric section at walmart or fabric store. It comes in a package in all different colors. We always get the double fold kind.

I'm not sure if I correctly understood your question but I'll give it a try...
I've used single fold bias tape to wrap my braids for some extra color. Because the bias tape is slightly stretchy, it grips the braid nicely and wraps smoothly. There are a couple ways to wrap the braids. Here's the method I have used: After braiding the hair, I get a length of bias tape and tie it at the top of the braid so that one end of the tape is about 2/3 longer than the other one. The total length of tape you need depends on the length of your braids and how closely you wrap. It will take some practice to figure out where on the tape is your starting point. Once I tie the tape to the top of the braid, I hold the short end of the tape against my braid and treat it like part of the braid. The longer piece gets wrapped around both the braid and the shorter bias piece. Continue wrapping down to the end of your braid. Tie the two bias pieces together and cover with a hair tie. Then do the same for the other side. Hope this makes sense. The bias tape is used for wrapping the hair and not for making ribbon streamers which may hang down from the ends of braids. Most of those are already attached to ones hair ties. For fringe at the end of braids, you could take a rectagular piece of leather and cut thin strips almost to the top of the rectangle. Insert a tie string at the top of the rectangle. Wrap the top around the end of your braid and tie it. Easy enough. |

Maybe you can go into the women's fancy section in the gallery. (See the search bar ^^) Some of the pics a closeups. May give you a better idea.

how i make them
For the ribbons that hang from the ends of the braids, what i do is i got to wal-mart and buy the smallest size of shoelaces that i can find. Usually it's like 27 inches or something like that. Then, I take my ribbon, decide how long i want to make it then double that. For example if you want it to hang down 10 inches, cut ribbons 20 inches long. Then, (this is where it gets hard to explain) I fold 1 ribbon in half, lay it up against the shoelace with the fold a little above then, pull the rest of the ribbon through the fold to tie it on. I continue doing this until I have it as full as want it to be. And that's it. I would think that you would be able to do the same type of thing with bias tape as with a shoelace. I like shoelaces, cause then when I'm putting them on, I can slide one side through the bottom of my braid (where the barrette will cover in case some hair comes out) and just wrap the rest of it around, tie it real tight, then put the barrette on top. Hope this helps. If anything wasn't clear enough let me know and I'll try to explain it better for you.

Hair ribbons
Yes that is what I meant, the hair ribbons that hang down from the end of the braids. Those are the ones that I'd like to learn to make. Thanks for the tips on the bias taps I will try and wrap her braids with that. The hair ribbons I was talking about are like the ones in this photo

Ive made these two different ways, I have taken my ribbon and layed them out the way I wanted them beacause I used a couple of different colors, aranged them in the fold of biased tape and as a quick "glue" so to say ironed it together with wonderunder and zipped over it a couple of times with my sewing machine, then wrap the end around my braid. The second way Ive done it is I took a long rectangle piece of material "your choice of color" had that whole thing wrap my braid and I sewed the ribbons to the end of the wrap itself so its a long rectangle with ribbons on the end I thought it looked good then I would criss cross either ribbon or colorfull shoe stings over the whole thing. to make it stay put hope that made sence?
