When my mom made my crown she used the place mat. Because it was stiff and it didn't do all floppy on me when I danced. At the back where it close she put tension bandage so it could stretch. And my barret and feather would cover it up.

placemats have a tendency to deteriate (sp?) over time - i've seen some from about five/six years ago time has not been good to them ...

i've made a couple of crowns - i have used everything from felt and placemats and canvas. i now use this stiff felt from micheals' hobby shops in the longer length. measure and make the crown that length ... personally i dont like those crowns with the space in the back with elastic or string keeping it together ..

i then use a glue stick to glue the felt to poster board thickness paper (to help the crown keep its shape and to help with warping) i bead the crown and then hand sew the ends of the crown together. after putting some leather on the back of crown to cover the threads. i have beaded the small space left between the ends - just for appearances .. that way you dont have to have a back barrette if you choose not to...

i have some pix of a crown i made for my little girl - i'll post them later

How is the rosette attached? I think I may want to put one on the back of this one thank-you for the photo's. I put heavy plastic canvas in the middle of most of my bead work so thats what ill put in the middle of this, ive had the same bead work going on five yrs and still has the same shape as when I first made it, I like the back of the crown has anice neat look to it.

When I put the backing of my crown on I put heat and bond on the material(I use a scarf because it breathable) but anyways I iron it on and cut out the shape of the crown. I leave a little bit of materail around the shape for sewing. When its on I sew on the backing. I use light heat and bond because it not so stiff and hard to sew on.

i usually just tack hand sew it through all layers of the bead work ... i havnt had to time to sew it on lately but i gotta get crackin cuz were going to yorkton this weekend .. lol

using a that "stop fray" stuff on the edges (personally never used it) or going old school and ironing a folded edge of the material you are using (if you are using cotton material) then hand sewing it to edge ... might be a better option. that way if you want to change the material after a summer (or whatever) time of use - it'll be easier than using that head and bond stuff (which kinda takes away from the beathability factor and cuz you'll still have to fold over the edge cuz even that heat and bond stuff frays big time if you dont put an edging on it) ...

thinking about doing that - sewing some cotton material over the leather that i used (all this talk of beathable materials .. lol) ... has anyone out there ever used that changeable head band stuff that cowboys use inside their hats for a crown? i know my dad gets his changed out from his cowboy hats regularly, and wonder if it would be useful in a crown ....

i remember readin in somewhere that, you know that band (sweatband) inside of the cowboy hat is replaceable ... i googled it and these miracool things came up and they arent what i was thinking about.

but some western shops do offer hat reshaping and replacement of the band inside ... i wonder if they'd put one inside a crown? lol
