Question on Northern Traditional Beadwork
I have a couple questions on Mens Northern Traditional Beadwork. Soon as I get done with my set of beadwork that I been working on I am going to be starting on my guys beadwork and i've never done Northern Traditional before.
So my question is what comes in a set of beadwork? and my other question is what stitch should I use? I been working with lazy and then I been doing alot of loom stuff lately. |

Would'nt he know the answer if he's a northern traditional dancer? Or is it supposed to be a surprise of sorts?

He hasn't danced in years because he was in the military and didn't get out till 2004 and plus the stuff he had before somebody made him and now he doesn't have it. So now he's trying to get back into the swing of it. |

There is a wide range of stylistic variations of northern traditional regalia, rooted both in personal artistic vision and tribal style. Most outfits have a beaded apron, moccs, and cuffs. Some also have one or more of the following: side tabs, a vest, roach "crowns," rosettes, bags, and knee and arm bands. Lane stitch and applique are the most commonly seen techniques.
Consultation with family and community are helpful for learning what is appropriate. Some types of men's regalia belong to certain families, nations, or societies. I'd advise asking some one knowledgable about your husband's/family's ways if in doubt. |

If you are starting out on the vest you should tack the beads but if you want you can lazy stitch. I think things like the vest and the drops on the side should be tacked. because they do little movement so there not so stiff when he dances.
Yeah but thats that!!! My mom made a mens traditional outfit I think she tacked it down wait hold on...Yeah she did nut yeah just thought I put my two cents in!!!

I beaded my man's northern tradish outfit.
Hey, with my man's northern tradish outfit, I beaded him a vest, cuffs, side drops, choker with a beaded design hanging from it, and a pair of mocc's. That was it. He told me what he wanted, and I finished it.
When I was done with all of this, I made his pants, shirts, and numerous amounts of new mocc's. And still yet to bead him a roach spreader and a staff stick. His outfit has been done for years, I'm beading my own right now. good luck with yours for him

One more opinion
I think it is up to you if you wanna do lazy stitch or tack it down. With my man, his first outfit is all tacked down. I plan on using a tacked down design and the rest lazy stitch for his next one. Either way, he will always want to wear something new. It would be faster to do lazy stitch, so you can get on with your life.......hehe and he'll be happy it's done too!!!
All of the really good dancer's don't necessarily have their beadwork all tacked down, some are lazy stitch and it still looks really nice.

Someone was looking for examples of Anishnaabek regalia and since I've been collecting pictures for a long time I organized a sampling, wrote out some of what I had been taught and my wife, Miika, coded me up a nice website for it.
