Hospital sheeting. It is like the baby lap pad stuff. But you can buy it at the fabric store by the yard.

Hope that helps..............

Lap-pad...My mom has been using it for over 30 years; I have beadwork she made me when I was a little kid, and it's still in good enough shape to wear. Lap-pad is what you need; you can get it at most any store that has a baby section. Make sure you buy plain white though; otherwise you could end up with baby patterns showing through your work!

That's the way I would go.. but do yourself a favor and search this forum.. and the archives on this subject. There were a lot of good conversations about this question. You have any questions ask blackbear.. she can probably tell you better than anyone where to look.

I was thinking you might want to go with the canvas for this one cause the wieght of that much lappad with beads might be overwelming... and you will be attaching "grass" to all these items so you are going to want to sew on it as well... yeah go with the layered canvas/stabalizer method that you read about here... but that's just my opinion.. and actually I would have said to ask OLchemist on this one LOL.

If you decide to use the baby lap pad material, definately use the plain white side to do the beadwork. One project I worked on, I used the lap pad material and started beading on the printed side of the material. My background color was a white bead, and you can faintly see the print of the material thru the beads!!

If you hate trying to draw straight lines, or just feel like cheating, you might try pillow ticking. (The lines are within the fabric.) I found out recently that it comes in two weights (light weight & heavy weight...like duck cloth). If you use the flip side of the cloth, the lines are lighter & shouldn't show.
I hate trying to draw all of those lines, so I can't wait to try this stuff out.

Has anybody else around here used pillow ticking before?

Good Morning, I agree with Blackbear. :worthy: When doing Grassdance and fully beaded drops for men's traditional regalia I like to use a medium weight canvas. It handles the fringing, bead weight and constant movement really well. You can buy it at the fabric store by the yard as well. I did a fully beaded breach for my husband and used the canvas and backed it with brain tan and it came out great and is holding up really well.

Someone mentioned german tan from crazy crow....I really do not like beading on that stuff as it tends to stretch over time and man is it thick and hot. I made a beaded yoke out of it once for a nice lady who had bought the german tan and wanted it made and beaded...8 months later...she and I both hated it so I re-did the entire thing with brain tan. That stuff don't breath either whew hot. Just a personal opinion.

Have a great day everyone!

I've done many large beaded items on canvas or duck cloth and I think its great. If backed with cotton it is breathable and not too heavy. Just be sure to bind all the edges first with bias tape so they don't fray while you are beading.

Honestly, I have not had the chance to try the lap-pad stuff yet so I can't comment on that.

I agree with Blackbear about using canvas and stabilizer layered. But be sure and tuck your edges or bind them so you don't have a raveling problem.

Drawing lines

Someone mentioned using pillow ticking for the lines already in the material.

If I am doing a lazy stitch background I always draw in my lines first. I use one of those quilters rulers that you can see thru.....makes it easier to draw your lines on the project, also makes putting in the background go really smooth.

Are you going to use lazy stitch for your harness or are you going to do it on the loom?
I'm getting ready to do traditional sidetabs and I'm planning on going with canvas myself.
