My neice is 12 years old and fancy shawl dances. Since she started last summer, I let her wear a set of my braid ties and barrette for the back of her head. We have a heck of a time getting her to wear her braid ties and barrette all of the time. I asked her today why she doesn't want to wear it sometimes, and she told me that they get too heavy and pull on her head.
So here's my question, how can I bead these items and make them weigh less? This has never been a problem with me so I have no idea what to do. Her grandma said stuff like that used to bother her too when she had long hair.

The ones she wears now are made of canvas, and backed with buckskin. The braid ties are 5 1/2 inches long and about 2 3/4 inches wide. The back barrette is about the same size.
If this doesn't work, I guess we'll have to put her on an exercise program to strengthen her head muscles!!! LOL!!!

good question my lil neice has the same proble she really loves them but she said their just too heavy i did try real tiny well small and the whol beading pic in the middle just turned out so ugly ~

i did just make some hair times that go in the braid and i have no idea how i did it but their wer eXtremely light i already sold them sooo i guess i dunno how to explain how i made them but for the back i just used some braintan and put light piece of plastic in the middle it all turned out real well im thinking of trying this for my niece just makihng it smaller plus i find some real real tiny tiny beads to work iwth and their light!!! i jus found them by accident when i was in Redcliff hope i can get some more!!:Cooler

how about just making them smaller? or use smaller beads if you are'nt already using something like 13 cuts....save this nice set for when she's older. Or even make some sequin ones. Most of the wieght is in the beads and if she's got a tender head.. poor kiddo.

Yeah, I would make them smaller with smaller beads. Just big enough to match her body size so that way they aren't too big or too small.

you might try beading on some of that fun foam stuff. i did some hairties for a lady beaded on that, and backed it with canvas, so they were really light.
