HELLO I HAVE A QUESTION ON BASIS OF SIOUAN BEADWORK..WHAT TYPE OF DESIGNS ARE TYPICALLY USED FOR SIOUAN BEAD WORK?THIS IS IN PREFERENCE TOWARDS GEOMETRIC STYLES. ANOTHER Q: DOES THE SIOUAN NATION USE FLAT OR WING FAN'S? ALSO, IS THERE A BOOK I CAN REFER TO?

It all depends on where your at!

Traditionally the Siouans on the plains tend to use a lot of geometric designs, using lazy stitch, while the ones over here on the East Coast tend to use more floral designs, using aplique (flat) beadwork!

If your refering to the Lakotas, Dakotas, and what not, your best bet is with the geometric!

If your refering to tribes like the Saponi, Catawba, etc... your best bet is floral!

First of all you might want to check your nomenclature. "Siouan," although commonly used in linguistic studies circles, is rarely used when refering to specific tribes or material culture.

I'm betting that you want information about the Sioux proper (Lakota, Teton, Oglala.....) A good begginer's guide is "Quill and Beadwork of the Western Siuox" by Carrie Lyford. This will help point you in the right direction.

Once you have picked out a first project I encourage you to post again on this list. There are lots of knowledgable people here who can help you out.
