Cool I made fake plumes for a craft fair

Hi, just throwing in my two cents worth of info. I looked at the gorgeous fluffs the fancy dancers would wear and wondered how they made the cindrical fluffy effect. So one day..a nice championdancer told me how she made hers. She said she used thin popsicle sticks or bamboo sticks for kebobs. She said get white thick thread or invisible thred. Tie it tight to the top. Chose your style of feather..tipped with black or all white. Start wrapping this feather, from the stalky base to the tip of the stick.wrap it good, choose your nextfeather, and so on. I made a killing and I had a feather plume made in 5 minutes that was worthy of a craft sale. Fun!

:16: What a Great idea! Now everyone will want to try it!

My daughter is rugged with feathers, (and everything else, too!) so I dont want to use her real plume for a few years. But the Crazy Crow plums look so flimsy and obviously fakey. I want to try your idea!

I have a couple of questions about how you did this:

When you add your feather onto the stick and wrap them, you only wrap them around the stakly base, right? Otherwise the fluff gets "smushed"?

And, when you are adding feathers, do you put them on the front and the back of the stick?

Will those weak feather plumes form Crazy Crow work for this?

Thanks for the help!

oh-my-lanta, my daughter was the same way, she was soooooo nosey, and i would put her down after nursing her and right away she would open her little eyes. i hardly ever had time to take a bath cause she always wanted to eat, i was like, "man, will this be forever?" but now it's gotten better that she's one, and she crawls and is starting to walk, and likes to play with toys, so it's gotten better. but she's still the feather of my eye :Angel2 right now i will check out ur pick meetmeinthegarden. i'll reply with feedback.

Unhappy No cp

Sorry everyone. I have no cp...and trying to get access to a digital camera. Just a poor crafter trying to make do. I hope to have it online soon. Thanks.
Meet me in the garden..your plumes were wonderful. i just use the fake maribou fluffs. Depends on what stick i use..a bamboo stick is smaller in fluff but put two together and they rock.

depends

On each row I used anywhere from 3 (bamboo) to 6 (popsicle stick)fluffs per row. Also it depends on the amount of fluff you want. Experiment. you can always take them out again if you don't like how it looks.

Question plumes

Hi Sierra,
I have a question: I keep reading about using popsicle sticks or bamboo when making plumes. This one plume thread didn`t contain that at all. How do you use them on the feather? Like where and how many? Cause feathers aren`t totally straight I know but I just dont know how to do that. Could you or anyone explain?

HEY FYI:
I got some plumes from Crazy Crow just to see what they looked like....HECK YEAH they looked fake...but this is what I did.
I went to the dollar store and got 2 bottles of hydrogen peroxide and put it in a bowl then took the bright orange tiped plumes and put them in it...just the orange part, not the whole plume.
Then after about 30 minutes I took them out ran them under cold water and dried them by tying them to my fan, but before you tie them, shake them real good. Then after about 5 minutes shek them again and put them back on the fan. After they were completely dry they looked awesome.
I have them tied up like they described on the baboo stick, and I wear them to pow wows and no one knows that they are fake at all...
So just watch the color and make sure that you don't over process them in the hydrogen....

what is a bamboo stick answered

Hello, there

When I refer to bamboo sticks it is referring to a kebob wicker type stick. You can buy a pack of sticks in any kitchen department. I've seen fluffs built on any type of hard long base to hold the feathers to. This then is placed in your hair tie or barrette. I use bamboo because it is easy to wrap and no real thinking about how to place the feathers on it. Another method i have used but it takes more feathers and is tricky in the way you hold the feathers to tie it on. Is using a popsicle stick, any size but Dairy Queen has these wooden popsicle type stick to stir your coffee. They are slim, square on the ends and strong enough to not bend too much when wrapping thread around it. Using a popsicle stick just adds automatic width to the fluff look on a dancers head. You would use 2 skewered fully fluffed bamboo sticks to match the width of one popsicle stick.

I hope this helps and I have access to a camera now...just have to go and do it now...Thanks!
