The normal starter dosage for the narcotic darvocet is 100 mg; and should be prescribed along with a healthy dose of acetominophen. Extremely addictive it is not recommended for those suffering from depression or prone to addictive behavior. So, I wouldn't expect 50mg to have much affect and can't understand why only 50mg would've been prescribed. If the same doctor you mention is the one that prescribed the darvocet at 50 mg I'd look for another doctor. Yes, addiction is a concern, but if the drug isn't used the way the manufacturer intended it to be used such as in lower than recommended dosages and for conditions it wasn't tested and approved for the effectiveness of the drug is compromised as is the health of the patient.
