I had to make about 5 pairs before I grasped the nuances of moccasin making and getting a good fit every time. Yes, using good materials also makes a difference. Some leather stretches more than others so that needs to be accounted for. I don't know what you are using for the soles but I have never had problems using buffalo rawhide. Other people use latigo leather but I've had trouble getting pieces that are the right thickness and density.
