Also, a 7.5mm or NATO 7.65 mm (I bet a 30-30 or other similar size would work great too) bullet casing works great as a socket at the base of the guitar string. I drilled a hole in through the side of the casing and then laced it through holes in the spreader. The socket stops the movement further up the string and gives it more of a whip like motion - it also seems to slow down the wear and tear where I have tied the bass string to the wire props (this point sits inside of the sockets and well below where the the string contacts the socket).
side note: I use bass guitar strings myself - they are a little stiffer and move a little slower, which I did. It's also convenient for me since in play bass and it allows me to recycle my strings :)
