DJ Spooky

I'd like to say a few words actually there will be more than a few. Certain people out there perhaps close to me don't agree with my PERCEPTION OF HIP-HOP CULTURE. And that's fine. But my perception is my own and has been shaped by my past and growing up within it on my Res and off. So if you don't agree with what I have to say, then perhaps you should write your own piece and post it up on Pow Wows.com then.

Perhaps this is just a disclaimer.

I am what I am this is all I can be, no more no less, what you're seein is me... J-5

I'd like to write a short review of DJ Spooky's 2007 release. This album was mixed with Dub, it is the word for that type of Reggae influenced sound. Rob Swift formerly of the Executioners scratched on the opening track and it was tight as hell. Then track 2 was a remix of Bob Marley's and Peter Tosh's: Mr. Brown. Such a bad azz track my friends! Man oh man! The third track was so so. And well over all I thought the album was down right funky with a very Dubby twist and feel.

But I think that Spooky brought it yet again with this album. Spooky as some of you know is quite experimental and off the beaten path. I was introduced to Spooky in 2000 and have loved his stuff ever since. Spooky is a weirdo DJ. He is out there in some other dimension like Kid Koala and DJ Q-Bert. I"d say his layering and mixing skills are just killer. I've not heard too much of his scratching nor beat juggling but, his ability to mix various genre's of music and insane video game and space sounds are out of control.

Again Mix Master Mike is another cat who deserves mentioning as well in this piece. I mean you can't mention crazy space sounds without mentioning Mix Master Mike. For those of you who do not know who that is, Mix Master Mike is the DJ for the Beastie Boys. And if you don't know who they are, well then you might want to ask your Auntie or Uncle or older cousins about them kiddies.

But back to the artist at hand, DJ Spooky. Spooky blends the unique sounds of many forms of music that other main stream DJ's and Hip-Hop/Rap DJ's don't if they even have a live human being on a set of tables and not just a drum machine and sampler. Spooky's style is somewhat dissonant and may be hard on the commercially tuned person's ears. Yes there is vocals and rapping over some of his stuff. It may be a guest MC or some other group he is cuttin up or beat juggling or layering. I don't wish this Spooky highlight to be a cut down of mainstream RAP or HIP-HOP. So don't get all butt hurt people. All in all Spooky is one of the best DJ's to come out of the 90's and still to be going strong in this new era of Hip-Hop Culture on Turtle Island.

Peace Ya'll
