The end of our busy powwow season is approaching. One more long road trip to Comanche Fair! The drive from Washington D.C. to Oklahoma for us is a two day confined endeavor. No matter how big our vehicle is we never seem to have enough room. So, we decided the only solution was to look outside the vehicle to haul our gear.
I researched a lot of carriers and found the most affordable one. We purchased The SportRack Explorer Roof Box and we love it! When traveling to powwows this carrier was essential to maintaining order in our car. Strong and spacious, the rooftop carrier is an ideal accessory for people who need more storage space than their car can provide. The cost was $189 which is a good investment for families who travel the powwow highway often.
The cargo carrier is made of high-density polyethylene, the box features a sturdy finish that helps to withstand variable road and weather conditions. It mounts directly to factory installed or aftermarket crossbars with the U-bolt kit that comes along with the set. The easy-to-use passenger side opening design has two secure locking latches for easy curbside access and added safety. With a capacity of 509 liters (54″ x 39″ x 19.5″) and maximum load of 100 lbs, the cargo carrier offers generous space to store extra luggage and your precious powwow rig!
If you’re looking for something less expensive, there is also a water-resistant nylon constructed cargo carrier (SportRack Sherpa 13) which costs $49. Dimensions: 35″ x 35″ x 18″.
By having most of our belongings in the rooftop carrier we had room for a cooler inside the car this time. I was able to store food and healthy snacks in the cooler and we didn’t have to stop for fast food which also saved us a lot of money on the road. Why didn’t I buy this rooftop carrier sooner? We also didn’t have to worry about the bustles being damaged inside the car because the carrier was big enough to store two bustles along with three buckskin dresses and accessories.
My family has so much room inside the car now and happy passengers means less stress for me the “powwow chauffeur”- lol!

I agree that these rooftop carriers are the best. We own one as well and it has served us well and especially during the pow wow season; since we all dance we have all of our suitcases and chairs. And although we drive a Toyota Highlander and is big enough as it would seem due to the fact that we also bring a cooler and other items. So yes I agree these are a great investment. Another idea only because I found mine on Craigslist for $50.00. That is worth a try before we come upon the pow wow season as well. Happy Hunting!

I noticed that You had said that You were ALSO able to carry “TWO” Bustles inside that carrier!!! Well,I had previously looked at cargo-carriers like this one before,but could NEVER find one LARGE ENOUGH to carry my Feather-Bustle inside of!!! Even with it folded-over,it was just too LONG of a bustle,so I guess my question here is: Were You talking about smaller “fancy-dance” bustles here?? Just wondering!!!
