No Doubt Pulls New Video – Offensive to Native Americans

The band No Doubt released a video for their new song “Looking Hot” last week. The video was pulled within hours because of complaints from Native Americans.
They posted a message on their site:
As a multi-racial band our foundation is built upon both diversity and consideration for other cultures. Our intention with our new video was never to offend, hurt or trivialize Native American people, their culture or their history. Although we consulted with Native American friends and Native American studies experts at the University of California, we realize now that we have offended people. This is of great concern to us and we are removing the video immediately. The music that inspired us when we started the band, and the community of friends, family, and fans that surrounds us was built upon respect, unity and inclusiveness. We sincerely apologize to the Native American community and anyone else offended by this video. Being hurtful to anyone is simply not who we are.
The video is no longer available on YouTube or Vimeo. However some websites have saved a copy. View the video.

I have several thoughts about this video… 1) They thought this was well-done enough to release it? In terms of artistic quality I think it’s subpar to what I would expect from this band, and that alone is offensive since it involves the People. 2) The song isn’t very good either so again the fact that a Native American imagery was chosen to go along with it is less than flattering. 3) Last but not least, Yes! I find the plot idea distasteful. As someone who would very much like to ascertain which tribe my ancestor was from (most likely Chickasaw but I haven’t personally seen the paperwork yet), I feel that it trivializes the history of painful conflict between the cultures. I appreciate that they removed the video and apologized, and that they did attempt to “vet” it before release.
